SKIN DEEP (the film and accompanying facilitation guide) is used across
the country - at universities, secondary schools, churches, community
theaters, police stations, corporations, private homes and conference
centers. The film has encouraged individuals to open up and say things
they've never said before, to people they've never spoken to before, about
an issue most people avoid because they can't imagine where to begin. The
facilitation guide, written by a several experienced facicilitators,
outlines in detail ways to use the film to make the most impact.
HERE ARE A FEW EXAMPLES OF HOW TO USE SKIN DEEP:
- At an event sponsored by the high school and the police department in
Albany, California a standing-room-only screening of the film brought out
much of the community and sparked a discussion that led to the formation
of a city Human Rights Commission.
- After a screening in Knoxville,Tennessee community members established circle groups
to continue to address the racism amongst them.
- At the University of Washington in Seattle the screening of SKIN DEEP had such an impact
that a program has been established whereby the entire student body will see the film.
- And at Menlo-Atherton, a public high school in Menlo Park, California SKIN DEEP is part of a
landmark diversity training initiative to improve relations on a racially divided high school campus.
For settings when time does not allow for a screening of the full
documentary, we also offer TALKING ABOUT RACE, a package of two short
videos (12 and 13 minutes) excerpted from SKIN DEEP. TALKING ABOUT
RACE is structured around potential discussion topics which are outline in
a 70 page facilitation guide. |
