{"id":29,"date":"2012-05-22T17:53:56","date_gmt":"2012-05-22T17:53:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.irisfilms.org\/site\/?page_id=29"},"modified":"2012-05-22T18:52:48","modified_gmt":"2012-05-22T18:52:48","slug":"about","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/www.irisfilms.org\/site\/about\/","title":{"rendered":"About"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.irisfilms.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/PamHarrisColor.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" title=\"PamHarris\" src=\"http:\/\/www.irisfilms.org\/site\/wp-content\/plugins\/image-shadow\/cache\/c878d67d6a274828a55f7876845d1286.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"189\" height=\"142\" \/><\/a><\/strong>Pamela Harris, Executive Director<\/h2>\n<p>Pamela Harris is the executive director of Iris Films. \u00a0Pam has a background in media as a documentary director, producer, editor, outreach and engagement professional and a leader in the field of media philanthropy.\u00a0 She most recently served as the managing director of Grantmakers in Film + Electronic Media, an association of philanthropists supporting media and technology for social good. \u00a0She was one of four co-directors on the film\u00a0<em>Waging a Living<\/em>, a PBS documentary about low-wage working families, and she oversaw educational outreach and engagement for the Oscar-nominated<em>\u00a0Long Night\u2019s Journey into Day<\/em>, about South Africa\u2019s Truth and Reconciliation Commission.\u00a0 In 2007, she produced and directed\u00a0<em>Land of Promise: the Story of Allensworth<\/em>, a short documentary about a historically black town in California that faces the threat of encroachment by agribusiness. \u00a0Prior to filmmaking, Pam worked in the non-profit sector with community-based programs as an administrator, development professional, program director, and counselor.\u00a0 She has worked with a broad spectrum of communities and causes, including physically and developmentally disabled adults, affordable housing, low-income artists, and rape survivors.\u00a0 Pamela holds a B.A. in Sociology from Vassar College and a Masters in Journalism with a focus in documentary film from the Graduate School of Journalism at UC Berkeley.<\/p>\n<h2>Our Board<\/h2>\n<h2>Aya de Leon<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.irisfilms.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Aya-headshot.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" title=\"Aya-headshot\" src=\"http:\/\/www.irisfilms.org\/site\/wp-content\/plugins\/image-shadow\/cache\/1367b45319be0143795c85628fa6277f.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"173\" height=\"230\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n<h5><strong><\/strong>Writer\/performer\/teacher\/activist<\/h5>\n<p>Aya de Leon is a Black\/Puerto Rican writer\/performer\/teacher\/activist\u00a0in the Oakland Bay Area.\u00a0 She is the director of June Jordan\u2019s Poetry for the People, teaching poetry, spoken word and hip hop at UC Berkeley. \u00a0 Her work has received acclaim in the<em>Village Voice<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Washington Post, American Theatre Magazine<\/em>, the\u00a0<em>Oakland Tribune<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>San Francisco Chronicle<\/em>.\u00a0 She was named best discovery in theater for 2004 by the\u00a0<em>San Francisco Chronicle<\/em>\u00a0for\u00a0<em>Thieves in the Temple: The Reclaiming of Hip Hop<\/em>, a show about fighting sexism and commercialism in hip hop, which played to sold-out crowds in the Bay Area.\u00a0 Also in 2004, she received a Goldie award from the SF Bay Guardian in spoken word and in 2005 she was voted \u201cSlamminest Poet\u201d in the annual East Bay Express Best of the Bay. Also in 2005, she hosted the kickoff party for Al Gore\u2019s Current TV Network with Mos Def. Young Women of Color on Today\u2019s Feminism<\/em>\u00a0(Seal Press). Her essays have appeared in several anthologies, including\u00a0<em>50 Ways to Support Lesbian and Gay Equality<\/em>, and her commentaries have been featured on NPR\u2019s All Things Considered, the\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em>, and the\u00a0<em>Christian Science Monitor<\/em>.\u00a0She\u2019s the former editor of\u00a0<em>ColorLines<\/em>\u00a0magazine, and a former columnist for\u00a0<em>Ms. Magazine.\u00a0<\/em>Daisy holds a Masters in Journalism from Columbia University, and is currently pursuing her MFA in creative writing at the University of Miami, where she is at work on her first novel. She frequently delivers lectures throughout the United States on intersecting issues of race, class, gender, and social justice. Rupert<\/h2>\n<h5><strong><\/strong>Attorney<\/h5>\n<p>Maya Rupert is the Federal Policy Director for the National Center for Lesbian Rights.\u00a0Additionally, she has been a regular contributing writer to a number of media outlets\u2014including the<em>\u00a0Los Angeles Times<\/em>, the\u00a0<em>San Francisco Chronicle<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>The Huffington Post<\/em>\u2014where she frequently addresses the intersection of race, sexual orientation, and gender identity. In 2011,\u00a0<em>Ebony Magazine<\/em>\u00a0named her on its Power 100 List, which features the most influential African-American leaders in the country.\u00a0Maya received her B.A. from U.C. Santa Barbara in 2003, and her J.D. from U.C. Berkeley (Boalt Hall) in 2006. In 2007, Maya clerked for the Honorable Eric L. Clay of the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.
