{"id":61,"date":"2012-05-22T18:32:58","date_gmt":"2012-05-22T18:32:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.irisfilms.org\/site\/?page_id=61"},"modified":"2012-06-13T15:15:21","modified_gmt":"2012-06-13T15:15:21","slug":"afro-uruguay","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/www.irisfilms.org\/site\/films\/afro-uruguay\/","title":{"rendered":"Afro Uruguay: Forward Together"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.irisfilms.org\/site\/films\/afro-uruguay\/afro-uruguay-spanish\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-102\" title=\"spanish\" src=\"http:\/\/www.irisfilms.org\/site\/wp-content\/plugins\/image-shadow\/cache\/35609b8b98d2b4602badeb81aba5e199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"135\" height=\"36\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Afro Uruguay: Forward Together<\/em>\u00a0is a documentary film about the Afro Uruguayancommunity, its unique history, rich musical traditions, and contemporary struggles for uplift and change.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" title=\"Palermo (800x450)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.irisfilms.org\/site\/wp-content\/plugins\/image-shadow\/cache\/31690efedb2d003f56d44b76bc13f20b.jpg\" alt=\"Palermo graffiti art\" width=\"180\" height=\"101\" \/>Uruguayans of African heritage make up about 10% of the country\u2019s population.\u00a0 And while they have not suffered the same kinds of\u00a0brutal repression as African Americans did in their struggle during the last century for equal rights, Afro Uruguayans remain economically marginalized.\u00a0 Of the estimated population of about 300,000 fewer than 200 have attended college and the vast majority is stuck in low wage jobs as maids, janitors and other unskilled labor.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" title=\"Elizabethheadshot (800x450)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.irisfilms.org\/site\/wp-content\/plugins\/image-shadow\/cache\/61450713d25868945e9c846ea1491451.jpg\" alt=\"Elizabeth headshot\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>Among those fighting for a better tomorrow is Elizabeth Su\u00e1rez, the head of a group struggling to build a cultural center for Uruguayans of African descent in Palermo, a once proud, now impoverished neighborhood.\u00a0 Living with her sisters in a multi-family dwelling in the heart of black Montevideo, she braids hair to make a living and is active as a women\u2019s rights advocate, Afro Uruguayan activist, and\u00a0<em>candombe<\/em>\u00a0dancer.
